Hi! I’m Katie.
I am an artist born and raised in Rochester, NY with a few stops along the way. I have always been fascinated by detail and complex objects and find the tiniest of details are the ones that stick with us. That is what I try to capture in my work. I only own small brushes and hope that I always keep my 20/20 vision because my work would be tough to do without either one.
I graduated from Webster Schroeder High School in 2002 and went to Mercyhurst University (B.A. Art Education) where I was awarded the Sister Angelica Cummings Senior Art Award and after a short stint in the UK teaching on a US military base, set off to Boston for my first teaching position as an elementary art teacher in Hingham, MA. While in Boston, I worked toward my MFA (Studio Teaching) in the College of Fine Arts at Boston University. I felt the pull of home calling me and moved back to Rochester in 2012. I have been teaching high school and middle school art since, and am currently teaching Middle School art in Pittsford, NY. I am inspired every day by my students and their passion and excitement for the visual arts. I live in Pittsford, NY with my husband and two small children.
I am a collector of objects and things and have always been a treasure hunter. I have always had little containers filled with small objects and am also the person who will dig through a deep bin at a garage sale to find a treasure or interesting object at the bottom. I love flea markets, antique shows, old photographs, and objects that have a story, or can tell a story. I have always written a history for objects in my head, whose hands have touched them, and the journey the object has taken to get to me. I am currently working on a series (Washed Ashore Collection) of objects found on the beach, inspired by my time living in a beach house on Duxbury Beach in Massachusetts during a very rough winter (Winter Storm Nemo and Hurricane Sandy blew through during my stay). The objects found on the beach that year ranged from vintage fishing lures, to watch faces, to skeleton keys, and finding these objects sparked so much wonder from me, so naturally they have become the inspiration for so much of my current work.
